Reflection of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
I just finished the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. The author spent ten years to do the research and interview Lacks family. She was looking for all information about Henrietta Lacks and HeLa cells. The book is all the data she found. Personally, I don’t very interested about the stories in the book. But, all events in the book were truly happened. My favorite part for this book is the ending. On one hand, the ending makes me feel some sadness. Clover is gone; Gary, Fred, Cootie died; and then Deborah died. On the other hand, Lacks family is getting better. Children may go to school. Zakariyya stop drinking. Family members are getting closer. Deborah dies with peace. She was push herself too much to do researches about her mother Henrietta and her sister Elsie. Now, Deborah feels everything she has to do is done and it’s the time for her. The last 3 pages of the book author flash back to once she was sit with Deborah and Davon watch the tape BBC recorded but didn’t used. Deborah said about her opinion about immortal and “heaven looks just like the Clover”(page 309). This reminds me that author wants to show a information that Clover and Deborah is gone, maybe Deborah now is meeting her mother Henrietta in Clover at heaven. It’s a beautiful ending. I will recommend this book for my friend who wants to learn about medication or American history.
