The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks is a book about the true stories of Hela cells, Henrietta Lacks and the Lacks' family. The author Rebecca Skloot spent 10 years to interview Lack's family and people who related to Hela cells. This book is all the information she got, and the stories are not told chronologically. In my opinion, the author wrote stories by this way for many reasons.
First, author tells the stories not chronologically is to point out the main ideas. The book has three parts: Life, Death and Immortality. The first part talks about Henrietta's lifetime, this part are the events happened to Henrietta. The second part is things happened after Henrietta's death. The last part is immortality. I haven't read yet, but through the contents I guess it's about Lack's family realize Henrietta's cell is still alive and do the researches of HeLa cells done for humans medical experiments. At that time, people started to realize they were cheated by the doctor and reporter. HeLa cells are coming from Henrietta Lacks not Helen Lane or Helen Larson. Overall, author organized the events in three parts to makes the main ideas of each part much stronger.
Second, the author uses hook to make story more interesting. When people read something is happening but not detailed, they will want to know more details. At the beginning of the story (page 13), the author shows a picture in our mind. On a raining day, David Lacks with his two children sat in his old car outside of Johns Hopkins Hospital waiting for the Henrietta who just ran into the hospital. This is an example of hook. Author shows some information at beginning. Readers will have a lot of questions and be more interesting to keep reading.
The last reason I believe Rebecca Skloot organize events by her own order is to make things more logical. If the book just follows the time order and started at the1920 when Henrietta was born, the book will be a history data. We can't focus on the main ideas and most important events. Also the book will be boring. Therefore, by following the author's order of events in the book, readers easily to understand the main ideas.
In summary, Rebecca Skloot wrote the book not chronologically is to make the book more interesting and easy to understand the main ideas.
