CAT-W“Hang It Up”
In the passage “Hang It Up” by Jesse Scaccia, the author states many students fail the class because they are using electronic devices in class, especially the cellphone. Scaccia says that cellphones are a distraction in the classroom, parents should not let their children bring cellphones to school. In the article cellphones are status symbols, students use them to play game or text with friends during the classtime. So, the author made a conclusion that electronic devices are harmful to students, they make students fail the classes. I disagree with this statement. In my opinion, students pass or fail the class based on their attitude and electronic devices may help students a lot while studying.
In the article, Scaccia said “A student with a cellphone is an uninterested student, one with a short attention span who cares more about his or her social life than education.” This means students will not pay attention to the teacher when they have cellphone. When I was young, I saw some of my class mates who don’t like study always did something else in class room. While the teacher was talking, they were looking outside of the window, drawing something or day dreaming. At that time, we didn’t have any electronic devices in class. My opinion is student who doesn’t like study, he will not pay attention in class anyway. The problem is his attitude not the electronic devices.
In addition, electronic devices are useful tool that can help up study more efficiently. My personal experience with this is I always use my cellphone as an electronic dictionary. It’s much faster to find the meaning of the word I don’t know when I use my cellphone. Furthermore, the dictionary on cellphone can check the meaning of the word on the internet, that gives many helpful details. For example, some words have a lot of meaning or some words are not common to use, I may not find what I want on paper dictionary. But when I use my cellphone I can find full explanation with sample sentences of the words, this function has helped me a lot when I learning new words.
Overall, I strongly disagree with Scaccia’s opinion. I believe whether students pass or fail the class depends on their attitude of study. On one hand, if students don’t like to study, they will not pay attention in class and get fail anyway. On the other hand, if they do like to study, electronic devices may have countless positive effects.
