Movie review:
GATTACA
We watched the movie, Gattaca, last week. It’s a science fiction movie. The words of title came from nucleobases of DNA, which is A, T, C and G. The title shows the movie is related to something about genes. The main character is Vincent, who was born in the old fashioned way. His genetic test shows he has bad eyesight, heart problem and only 30 years lifespan. So, his parents decide to get another baby by test tube to make the baby have perfect genes.
Vincent had a dream to go to the space since he was young, but in society only the people with aid of genetic selection (which means they have perfect genes) are valid to have better job and able to have chance to go to space. Then he finds a chance to borrow the identity from a valid person, Eugene, who was a swimming athlete and injured in car accident. Vincent uses Eugene’s identity, blood and urine to pass the genetic test then became a valid worker in Gattaca Aerospace Firm. Vincent has to make sure to not leave any of his genes when he was working in the company.
The most impressive part for me is Vincent training himself extremely hard to despite his bad genes. He was living longer than his genes said, and he became able to beat his brother in the swimming game “chicken”. In the end, Vincent sits in the rocket and goes to the space. After all the difficulty, he finally achieves his dream. I think the director wants to use the main character Vincent as a reflection to everybody. If we try hard to do everything then we can achieve our dreams, nothing had decided when we are born.
